Presentation regarding NEA
Priority Schools Campaign

Who is involved with NEA’s Priority Schools Campaign?
Short answer: everyone who cares about public schools. National Education Association members working in lower-performing schools, NEA staff, state affiliates and locals, parents, community leaders, education advocates, policy makers, and businesses.
What is the Priority Schools Campaign (PSC)?
The Priority Schools Campaign grew out of a mandate from NEA’s annual Representative Assembly, where more than 9,000 delegates voted to focus resources on informing and engaging members in collaborative work to transform lower-performing schools, our priority schools. The campaign supports:
  • School transformation approaches that involve educators, communities and policymakers in state capitols, in Congress and in the Obama administration.
  • Collaboration on innovative programs to measure student success and teacher quality.
  • Attracting and keeping the best educators and necessary resources for the schools of greatest need.

WEA Caucus - June 30, 2011

WEA Caucus
June 30, 2011
10:30-12:30 p.m.

Small Group Discussion – Where is the plan?
2009 – Developed a plan in San Diego at the RA
Not successful in communicating strategic plan with others.

Economic change + political change = WEA needs new strategies
New political reality – conversations, polling – member and public, surveys

6696 – Neo-reformers, piloting new evaluation system – stopped legislation, middle ground on testing for special needs students, economy continues to deteriorate in WA state, cuts absorbed by health care for children, cola, salaries

November 2010 – no bill passed to raise new revenue, 2/3 majority

Strategic PLAN

1.     Organizing – find and engage leaders in every local, build community confidence in collective bargaining (resonating with parents), build leaders in each constituency group
2.     Funding – make visible the 2011 legislative cuts, support continued work of Paramount Duty Coalition, develop two-pronged strategy around local levies and statewide funding source
3.     Strengthen our Schools – promote the profession by advocating for strong student centered educations that draws from professional expertise, build capacity
4.     Public Employee Union Attacks – reframe the message regarding sources of budget woes, we are not the problem, recruit and train pro-union, pro-education candidates, monitor anticipate and respond to players engage in attacks (get candidates to run for office from within the union)

What issues most engage and energize your local members?
Given the environment, what action are you willing to take?

Strong, coordinated message and communication.

Joe Biden Speaks at NEA RA - July 3, 2011

Vice-President Joe Biden addresses delegates at the 2011 Representative Assembly

July 03, 2011
By Cynthia McCabe
Unions are the ones fighting for the middle class and the National Education Association especially is fighting to ensure all students have access to a quality public school, Vice President Joe Biden told thousands of cheering educators Sunday in a stirring speech to NEA's 90th Representative Assembly.
"Thank God for your unyielding belief that in the toughest of circumstances every child, every child, deserves a chance," Biden told the audience of nearly 9,000 people. "I just wish those folks who are attacking you now, I wish those folks who are trying to ascribe the blame for the worst recession America has had since the Great Depression knew you a little better."
NEA members' fight for their rights as workers, is "about our children," Biden said. "Your fight is about giving them the best chance." He later added, "because of you the American dream will grow faster and further than ever before."

Vice president, Joe Biden, spoke to the NEA RA this morning. Video highlights from this speech, and other speeches at the RA are available at the link below.
